Meteorite Information

This information grid compares 20 recent meteorite entries by their classification, mass, fall status, year, and geographic coordinates, allowing us to study materials beyond planet Earth.

The table is sorted by mass from largest to smallest. Use the interactions to explore individual meteorites, learn new terms, and identify patterns in the data.

How to Read the Grid

Meteorite mass in grams was used to organize this data table (yellow column). Click a meteorite name to see a summary of its information. Click on column headings to learn what they mean.

The meteorite data is organized by mass, from largest to smallest.

Meteorite Data

Meteorite Name
The name assigned to the meteorite entry.
Classification
The recorded classification of the meteorite, such as LL5, L6, H4, or CR2.
Mass (g)
The recorded mass of the meteorite specimen in grams. This is the core column used to sort the table.
Fall Status
"Fell" means the meteorite's fall was observed. "Found" means it was discovered after landing.
Year
The year associated with the meteorite entry.
Latitude
The recorded latitude coordinate of the meteorite.
Longitude
The recorded longitude coordinate of the meteorite.

Exploring the Data

Example 1: Click Chelyabinsk to explore the largest meteorite in this dataset.

This table is sorted by mass. Chelyabinsk's recorded mass is 100,000 grams, while the next largest entry, Los Vientos 028, has a recorded mass of 12,110 grams. It was also one of the last observed meteorites recorded in this dataset.

Example 2: Click Fell vs Found to highlight the meteorites whose fall was recorded as "Fell."

Most entries in this dataset are marked "Found." A meteorite that "Fell" means that its fall was observed by scientists. One that was "Found" was discovered. The two entries marked "Fell" are Chelyabinsk and Battle Mountain. This allows us to inquire about what data and information might have been missed or unobservable due to the way it was discovered and recorded.

Example 3: Click Classification to highlight the classification information.

Some classifications of meteorites use letters and numbers, while others describe a specific meteorite family or origin. The letters H, L, and LL represent different chemical groups in ordinary chondrites. The number describes the degree of metamorphism, or how much the meteorite has been changed by heat and pressure. In general, a higher number means a greater degree of metamorphism.
